The Library of Birmingham

An Architectural Landmark and Modern 'People's Palace'

The Library of Birmingham, opened in 2013, is a stunning piece of modern architecture designed by the Dutch firm Mecanoo. Its striking facade of interlinking metal rings and its location in Centenary Square make it one of the city's most photographed buildings.

  • Key Highlights:

    • The Facade: The exterior is covered in a decorative metal filigree of circles, symbolising Birmingham's history of industry and craftsmanship (like the Jewellery Quarter).

    • The Secret Gardens: Take the escalators to the upper levels to find the two outdoor garden terraces which offer fantastic panoramic views of the cityscape.

    • The Shakespeare Memorial Room: At the very top of the building, the original Shakespeare Memorial Room, dating back to 1882, has been beautifully reconstructed. It houses Britain's most important Shakespeare collection.

    • Vast Collections: Beyond its architecture, the library is an important research hub, holding globally significant archives like the Boulton and Watt papers (pioneers of the Industrial Revolution).

Perfect For: Architecture enthusiasts, students, and visitors looking for the best free city viewpoints.
